I was having trouble picturing where Genly Ai was traveling at certain points in The Left Hand of Darkness, so I decided to upload a map. Sure, it's no map of Middle Earth, but I think it should be just as helpful.
Another interesting tidbit for context (external to the storyline): I found a site that catalogues "the subgenres of speculative fiction" (includes a number of sci-fi/spec-fic genres and subgenres). I know that Le Guin took pains in her (1976) intro to present Left Hand as a (non-predictive/non-speculative) work of science fiction, and as a "pack of lies" (p. 3) used to reveal something true, or at least to transform her reader in some way--but I thought it was interesting. Anyway, I'd wager a subgenres or two has appeared since her forward was published ~40 years ago.
